A Metro North train out of Poughkeepsie derailed early Sunday morning in the Bronx
According to officials at this time, four people are dead and 63 more injured, including the train’s operator, as a result of the incident.
The derailment occurred near the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx about 7:20 AM. The train left Poughkeepsie this morning at 5:54 AM and was due into Grand Central Station at 7:43 AM.
Governor Cuomo was at the scene and said, “It’s obviously a very tragic situation, the first order of business is to care for the people on the train.”
The total number of passengers on board at the time was not immediately known. Had this been a work day, the casualties would have been much greater.
The New York Fire Department said three of the four people who died were found outside the train. Scuba divers were also brought in to search the Hudson River near the location of the accident.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, in a statement this morning, said, “My family’s thoughts and prayers are with the victims and loved ones of all those affected by today’s tragic accident, and I want to thank our first responders who arrived immediately to save lives. Metro North is an integral part of life to the Hudson Valley, and the MTA and National Transportation Safety Board must take immediate steps to ensure that this accident could never happen again.”
This tragic incident will have an immediate impact on workday commuters, as of right now, service has been suspended indefinitely on the Hudson Line between Grand Central and Croton Harmon.
As more details are released, Hudson Valley Insider will update this story.
